Chapter 04 ยท M04 ยท Testosterone

THE PERFORMANCE
HORMONE

Drive. Muscle. Confidence. Testosterone is not just a "man hormone." It is the foundation of how you think, move, and feel. When it drops โ€” everything drops with it.

Section 01

NOT JUST A
MAN HORMONE

Most people hear testosterone and think bodybuilding. That is wrong. Testosterone is a foundational hormone in both men and women. Men produce more. Women produce less. But both need it. And both suffer when it drops.

In men it is produced primarily in the testes. In women it comes from the ovaries and adrenal glands. The amount differs. The importance does not.

It controls more than most people realise. It is not just about muscle. It is about how you think, how you feel, how much energy you have, how clearly you see the future, and how motivated you are to go after it.

๐Ÿ’ช
Muscle & Strength
Drives protein synthesis. More testosterone means more muscle built from the same training. The single biggest anabolic signal in the body.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Fat Burning
Directly opposes fat storage. Low testosterone shifts your body toward storing fat โ€” especially belly fat. High testosterone favours muscle over fat.
๐Ÿง
Mental Drive
Confidence, competitive drive, focus, and ambition are all closely linked to testosterone. Low T often looks like depression. Many men are misdiagnosed.
๐Ÿฆด
Bone Density
Testosterone keeps bones dense and strong. Low T accelerates bone loss in both men and women. The effects are silent until something breaks.
โšก
Energy & Recovery
Controls your baseline energy output and your ability to recover from physical stress. Low T = slow recovery, chronic fatigue, no motivation to train.
โค๏ธ
Libido
In both men and women. Low libido is one of the first and most consistent signs of dropping testosterone. It is a signal worth paying attention to.
02
Zone The Decline โ€” What Low T Looks Like
Section 02

LOW TESTOSTERONE
THE SYMPTOMS

Most men with low testosterone are never diagnosed. They go to the doctor. They are told they are tired, stressed, depressed. They leave with antidepressants. The root cause is never measured.

Average testosterone levels in men have dropped roughly 25% since 1980. A man with the same age and lifestyle has significantly less testosterone today than his grandfather did. This is not genetics. This is environment, diet, sleep, and chronic stress.

300
ng/dL is the bottom of "normal." Most men feel terrible at 300. Optimal is 600โ€“900. The range is wide. The difference is enormous.
Clinical reference ranges
40%
Of obese men have clinically low testosterone. Fat cells convert testosterone to estrogen โ€” accelerating the cycle in both directions.
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology
Signs You Should Get Tested

Chronic fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. Low or zero libido. Difficulty building muscle despite training. Belly fat that won't move. Brain fog. Depression or flat mood with no clear cause. Loss of morning erections. Poor motivation. Any combination of these is your body asking you to check your hormones.

03
Zone What Kills It
Section 03

WHAT KILLS YOUR
TESTOSTERONE

Most of the things destroying testosterone are decisions. Not genetics. Not age. Decisions you make every day. The good news: reversible decisions produce reversible results.

01
Poor Sleep
Testosterone is produced during deep sleep. One week of 5-hour nights cuts testosterone by up to 15%. This is the single biggest natural suppressor.
02
Chronic Stress
Cortisol and testosterone are direct opponents. When cortisol stays high, testosterone is suppressed. Chronic work stress, relationship stress, no recovery โ€” all of it reduces T.
03
Alcohol
Beer in particular contains phytoestrogens from hops. Alcohol directly impairs testosterone production in the testes. Heavy drinking causes long-term hormonal damage.
04
Seed Oils & Ultra-Processed Food
Industrial seed oils drive systemic inflammation. Processed food disrupts hormonal signalling. Your body cannot build testosterone from garbage inputs.
05
Obesity
Fat tissue contains aromatase โ€” the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. The more body fat, the more conversion. Low T causes fat gain. Fat gain causes lower T. A self-reinforcing cycle.
06
Overtraining
Training without recovery suppresses testosterone. Your body interprets chronic overtraining as a survival threat. It reduces anabolic hormones to conserve energy.
07
Low Fat Diet
Cholesterol is the raw material for testosterone. Men on very low fat diets consistently show lower testosterone. Fat is not the enemy. The right fat is essential.
08
Sedentary Lifestyle
The body is built to move. Physical inactivity reduces testosterone. Even walking daily has measurable positive effects on hormonal output.
04
Zone How to Raise It Naturally
Section 04

RAISE IT
NATURALLY

You do not need drugs to optimise testosterone. You need to stop doing the things that destroy it. Then you add the inputs that build it. That order matters. Most people skip the first step.

Compound Lifts
Squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press. Heavy compound movements produce the strongest testosterone response of any exercise. Train hard. Train heavy. Rest properly.
Sleep 7โ€“9 Hours
Not negotiable. Peak testosterone is produced between 3am and 8am during REM. Cut sleep and you cut production. No supplement replaces this.
Sun & Vitamin D
Vitamin D acts as a hormone precursor. Men with optimal Vitamin D levels have consistently higher testosterone. Get sun. Supplement if you can't. Test your levels first.
Zinc & Magnesium
Both directly involved in testosterone production. Most people are deficient in both. Zinc from meat, shellfish, seeds. Magnesium from leafy greens, nuts, dark chocolate.
Eat Enough Fat
Dietary fat provides cholesterol โ€” the building block of every steroid hormone including testosterone. Eggs, red meat, olive oil, avocados. Do not fear fat.
Manage Cortisol
Cold showers, breathing work, reducing chronic stressors, time in nature. Cortisol suppresses testosterone directly. Lower one, raise the other.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Lose excess body fat. Less aromatisation. More free testosterone. The effect is significant โ€” every percent of body fat reduction helps.
Limit Alcohol
Especially beer. If you drink, drink less and drink less often. The hormonal cost of regular heavy drinking is not worth it.
The Priority Order

Fix sleep first. Then training. Then diet quality. Then stress management. Then micronutrients. In that order. Most men who do steps one through four see dramatic improvements without touching a single supplement.

05
Zone Testing & Numbers
Section 05

GET YOUR
NUMBERS

You cannot fix what you cannot measure. Most doctors test total testosterone and stop there. That is not enough. Total testosterone tells you how much is circulating. Free testosterone tells you how much is actually available to your cells. They are not the same number.

Ask your doctor for a full panel. Not just total T. If they refuse or dismiss you โ€” find a different doctor. This is your health. You are allowed to advocate for it.

Marker What It Tells You Range Priority
Total Testosterone Total circulating testosterone โ€” bound and free combined 300โ€“900 ng/dL (normal) ยท 600โ€“900 optimal Essential
Free Testosterone The active, usable portion not bound to proteins 9โ€“30 pg/mL Essential
SHBG Sex Hormone Binding Globulin โ€” binds testosterone and makes it unavailable. High SHBG = low free T even if total T looks fine. 10โ€“57 nmol/L Essential
LH & FSH Signals from the brain telling the testes to produce testosterone. Helps identify whether low T comes from the brain or the testes. 1.5โ€“9.3 IU/L Recommended
Estradiol (E2) Estrogen. Men need some. Too much causes gynecomastia, low libido, fat gain. Check the ratio alongside testosterone. 10โ€“40 pg/mL Recommended
Vitamin D Direct precursor in testosterone production. Deficiency is common and causes measurable drops in T. 30โ€“80 ng/mL ยท aim 50โ€“80 Recommended
Normal vs Optimal

300 ng/dL is technically "normal." A man at 300 feels exhausted, unmotivated, and depressed. A man at 800 feels sharp, energised, and capable. The reference range is built on population averages โ€” not on what makes you feel and function at your best. Know the difference.

06
Zone TRT โ€” When It Makes Sense
Section 06

TESTOSTERONE
REPLACEMENT THERAPY

TRT is medical treatment for clinically low testosterone. It is not a shortcut. It is not a performance enhancer. When used correctly, under proper medical supervision, for people who genuinely need it โ€” TRT is legitimate and effective.

When used by healthy young men who just want to be bigger โ€” it is a different story. And the line between TRT and steroid use is much thinner than most people admit.

What TRT Is
Medical Treatment
Restores testosterone to a normal physiological range. Used for men with clinically diagnosed low testosterone. Supervised by a doctor. Regular blood testing. Correct dose maintained. Legitimate and effective when done right.
What People Do
The Borrowed Label
200โ€“400mg per week while calling it "therapy." The word TRT is borrowed. The dose is steroid-level. The label protects the image. Real therapeutic TRT sits at 100โ€“150mg per week โ€” not double that.
The Problem
Your Body Stops
Once you inject exogenous testosterone, your body stops making its own. The feedback loop closes. Your testes get the signal: production no longer needed. They shrink. They stop. Getting them to restart is not guaranteed.
The Reality
A Bandaid You Replace Forever
Most men on TRT are on it for life. Not because the treatment failed โ€” but because their natural production will never recover. It is a bandaid. It works. But you are changing it every week for the rest of your life.
When TRT Actually Makes Sense

You are older. Your levels are genuinely low โ€” confirmed by blood work, not YouTube. You have already fixed sleep, training, diet, and stress. Nothing moved the needle. You have money for proper medical supervision and consistent testing. TRT in that context is a legitimate tool. It is replacing what your body stopped producing. That is different from a 24-year-old injecting testosterone because he saw it on Instagram.

The men TRT makes the most sense for are not 22-year-olds at the gym. They are 50-year-old executives who spent decades running on stress, sleep deprivation, and poor food โ€” and whose hormonal systems paid the price. The wealthy know this. And they act on it.

Billionaire Case Study
Elon Musk
โš  Strongly Implied
Musk has never confirmed TRT specifically. But he has openly admitted to using ketamine for depression, semaglutide (Wegovy) for weight management, and on X in 2022 he posted without much context: "testosterone rocks ngl." His physical transformation over his 50s โ€” leaner, more muscular, visibly different โ€” has fuelled widespread speculation. He also invests in multiple longevity and biohacking protocols. The man optimises everything. His hormones are almost certainly no exception.
"Testosterone rocks ngl" โ€” Elon Musk, X (Twitter) ยท December 2022
Billionaire Case Study
Jeff Bezos
โš  Widely Speculated
Bezos has never confirmed TRT and no credible source has verified it. But his physical transformation is among the most dramatic of any public figure over 50. He went from the stereotypical slim tech founder to visibly muscular and built in just a few years โ€” around the time he stepped down as Amazon CEO, left his first wife, and publicly committed to health and longevity. The timing, the transformation, and the access to elite medical care make TRT a reasonable speculation. Nothing is confirmed. Everything looks like it.
No public statement confirmed. Sources close to Bezos deny steroid use and attribute the change to rigorous training and diet. โ€” Multiple media reports
The Real Point

TRT in the context of Bezos and Musk is not about bodybuilding. It is about damage repair. Decades of extreme stress, poor sleep, unhealthy habits, and relentless pressure left their hormonal systems depleted. TRT is the bandaid. It works. But the wealthiest men in the world using it to reverse years of self-inflicted damage is not the same story as a 22-year-old using it to look bigger on Instagram.

If You Are Considering TRT

Exhaust every natural option first. Sleep, training, diet, stress management, micronutrients. If after 6 months of real effort your numbers are still clinically low โ€” speak to an endocrinologist. Not a clinic that profits from prescribing. Not a YouTube coach. A doctor. Test every 3 months. Do not freelance this. And understand what you are signing up for: a bandaid you replace every week, possibly forever.

07
Zone The Estrogen Balance
Section 07

THE TESTOSTERONEโ€“
ESTROGEN RATIO

Every man has estrogen. You need it for bone density, cardiovascular health, and brain function. The problem is never estrogen itself. The problem is the ratio.

The higher your body fat percentage, the more aromatase enzyme you carry in that fat tissue. Aromatase converts testosterone to estrogen. The result: low testosterone combined with high estrogen โ€” even in men who are not on any drugs. This explains a lot of symptoms that get missed.

๐Ÿ“‰
Low Libido
High estrogen relative to testosterone suppresses sexual drive. Often one of the first visible signals of a poor ratio.
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ
Gynecomastia
Breast tissue growth in men. Caused by excess estrogen. Can occur naturally from obesity or from poorly managed steroid or TRT cycles.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
Emotional Instability
Excess estrogen in men is linked to mood swings, increased emotional sensitivity, and difficulty regulating emotional responses.
๐Ÿ’ง
Water Retention
High estrogen promotes water retention under the skin. Makes you look and feel soft. Common in men running testosterone without managing E2.
๐Ÿฉบ
Cardiovascular Risk
Both very high and very low estrogen in men increase cardiovascular risk. Balance matters as much as levels.
๐Ÿ”‹
Fatigue & Brain Fog
The imbalanced state โ€” low T, high E2 โ€” is one of the most common causes of chronic fatigue in men. Rarely tested for. Often medicated around.
The Fix

Reduce body fat. This is the primary driver of the imbalance and the most reliable fix. Strength training increases testosterone. Losing fat reduces aromatisation. The two work together. If you are managing TRT and not monitoring E2, you are doing it wrong. The ratio is what matters.

08
Zone The Dark Side โ€” Steroids & The Real Cost
Section 08

STEROIDS โ€”
THE REAL COST

Anabolic steroids are synthetic testosterone. They build muscle faster than your body can naturally. That part is true. What nobody puts in the thumbnail is everything that comes with them.

Your body produces testosterone through a feedback loop. Your brain signals your testes to produce it. When you inject synthetic testosterone from outside, your brain detects the surplus and shuts down your own production. The longer you use, the harder it is to restart. Some never do.

What Actually Happens Inside

Your body's natural hormone production shuts down while on cycle. When you stop, you crash. Testosterone drops to near zero. Estrogen spikes. You feel depressed, fatigued, emotionally unstable. This is post-cycle crash. It can last months. For some, it never fully resolves without medical intervention.

Heart
Left ventricular hypertrophy. Enlarged heart muscle. Higher risk of heart attack and stroke โ€” in men in their 20s and 30s. The wall thickens. It does not thin back down.
Liver
Oral steroids are hepatotoxic. Elevated enzymes. Peliosis hepatis โ€” blood-filled cysts in the liver. Damage accumulates silently over years.
Hormonal System
Natural production suppressed or shut down permanently. Testicular atrophy. Estrogen conversion causes gynecomastia. Fertility drops. Sperm count craters.
Mental Health
Aggression, mood swings, depression, anxiety โ€” especially on and after cycle. Dopamine and serotonin pathways disrupted. Higher dependency and withdrawal rates than most realise.
Skin & Hair
Severe acne across back, chest, face. Accelerated male pattern baldness โ€” permanent. DHT levels attack hair follicles. Once gone, not coming back.
Tendons & Joints
Muscles grow faster than tendons adapt. Tendon tears become common. Your strength outpaces your connective tissue. Injuries take years to heal.
14ร—
Higher rate of sudden cardiac death in professional bodybuilders versus amateur athletes.
European Heart Journal ยท 2025
36
Average age of cardiac death among Mr. Olympia open-category competitors. Not 60. Not 50. 36.
European Heart Journal ยท 2025
The Real Risk Calculation

You are trading years of healthy hormonal function for faster muscle growth. In your 20s and 30s your natural testosterone is at its peak. That is the best environment to build muscle you will ever have. Drugs during this window do not add to your peak. They replace it โ€” and damage the system that would have served you for decades.

THE PHYSIQUE THEY'RE SELLING
ISN'T THE FULL PICTURE.

They show you the muscle. They do not show you the blood panels, the TRT injections for life, the cardiac MRI, or the post-cycle crash. The product is the image. Everything else stays off camera.

Zone A Personal Message
Section 10

MY MESSAGE
TO YOU

A Personal Note โ€” From Experience

STAY NATURAL.
YOU DON'T NEED IT.

I have nothing against the people in that table. They work hard. They built real audiences. Some of them are honest about what they do. But the fitness industry today sells you a lifestyle โ€” healthy food, good sleep, sunlight, cold showers, ancestral living โ€” while behind the scenes, everyone is blasting gear. That gap between the brand and the reality is what concerns me. It is sad to see.

Scroll through YouTube today. Hundreds of fitness creators promoting bodybuilding. Promoting that lifestyle. What they do not tell you is that those competitions are not natural. To compete at that level you need years of training. And years of steroids. Years that come with a cost that never makes the thumbnail.

For the average person who just wants to look good? You do not need any of it. In two years of real training โ€” good food, consistent work, a plan you follow โ€” you can build a body most people will not believe is natural. They will think you used something. You didn't.

Steroids are expensive. They cost you money. They cost you your health. They cost you your hormonal system โ€” possibly forever.

And you cannot even trust what you are injecting. Most steroids on the black market are mixed with unknown substances. Produced in unknown conditions. You can get an infection. A disease. From a product you paid for and trusted.

When you come off cycle โ€” most guys cannot recover. Their testosterone is gone. Their body will not produce it anymore. They end up on TRT for life. Look at the biggest names on YouTube: Huberman, Greg Doucette, Mike O'Hearn who still denies it. Alex Eubank who finally admitted it. The Tren Twins whose name says everything. These are not drug-free athletes. These are the product they are selling you.

And then there is Zyzz.

He was probably the first guy to combine his physique with dancing and confidence and turn it into a movement on YouTube. He inspired millions. He died in a sauna in Thailand on August 5, 2011. He was 22 years old. Heart failure. From gear abuse. He had an undiagnosed congenital heart condition โ€” that steroids accelerated past the point of no return.

Since then the numbers have not gotten better. In a study of over 20,000 IFBB competitors, nearly 2 in 5 deaths were from sudden cardiac arrest. Professional bodybuilders die from heart failure at a rate 14 times higher than amateurs. At an average age of 36 years old.

27 out of 66 tracked professional bodybuilder deaths were cardiovascular. 61% of those heart deaths happened in men under 45. These are not old men. These are men who look like the picture of health in their social media thumbnails.

Stay natural. Build your physique. Two years from now you will look incredible. After that you maintain. You stay healthy. You avoid all the problems that come with that needle.

The body you want is possible without it. It always was. You just need to know what to do โ€” and have the patience to do it. That is what this book is for.

Stay patient. Stay natural. Stay consistent.
The long game always wins.
